Artist Info
Acronym is a classical music ensemble that specializes in performing music from the 17th and 18th centuries. The group was founded in 2012 by a group of musicians who shared a passion for historically informed performance practices and a desire to explore lesser-known works from the Baroque era. The ensemble's name, Acronym, is a nod to the practice of using the first letter of each word in a phrase to create an abbreviation. In this case, the phrase is "Alte Musik: Concept, Research, Organization, and Performance," which reflects the group's commitment to scholarly research and careful attention to historical context. Acronym's core members include violinists Johanna Novom and Edwin Huizinga, violist Kyle Miller, cellist Hannah Collins, and harpsichordist and organist Kivie Cahn-Lipman. The group often collaborates with other musicians and vocalists to create a rich and varied sound. One of Acronym's main goals is to bring lesser-known works from the Baroque era to a wider audience. The group's repertoire includes works by composers such as Johann Rosenmüller, Johann Heinrich Schmelzer, and Johann Christoph Pez, as well as more familiar names like Johann Sebastian Bach and George Frideric Handel. Acronym has performed at a number of prestigious venues and festivals, including the Boston Early Music Festival, the Berkeley Early Music Festival, and the Tage Alter Musik Regensburg. The group has also been featured on radio programs such as Performance Today and Harmonia. In 2014, Acronym released its debut album, "Laurel, oratorio per la Settimana Santa," which features a newly reconstructed oratorio by Italian composer Antonio Draghi. The album received critical acclaim and was named one of the top classical recordings of the year by The New York Times. Acronym has also been recognized for its innovative programming and commitment to historical accuracy. In 2016, the group was awarded a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to support a project exploring the music of Johann Rosenmüller. Overall, Acronym is a dynamic and innovative ensemble that is dedicated to bringing the music of the Baroque era to life for modern audiences. With its commitment to historical accuracy and its passion for exploring lesser-known works, the group is sure to continue making waves in the classical music world for years to come.More....
