Role:EnsemblePeriod:BaroqueGenre:ChoralThe Geraint Jones Orchestra was a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1955 by Welsh conductor Geraint Jones. The orchestra was known for its performances of Baroque and early Classical music, and it was particularly renowned for its interpretations of the works of Handel. Geraint Jones was born in 1917 in Cardiff, Wales. He studied music at the Royal College of Music in London, where he was a pupil of Sir Adrian Boult. After completing his studies, Jones worked as a conductor and organist in various churches and cathedrals throughout England. In 1955, Jones founded the Geraint Jones Orchestra with the aim of performing Baroque and early Classical music in a historically informed manner. The orchestra was made up of a small group of musicians who specialized in playing period instruments, such as the harpsichord, the viola da gamba, and the baroque trumpet. One of the highlights of the Geraint Jones Orchestra's early career was its performance of Handel's Messiah at the Royal Albert Hall in London in 1959. The performance was widely praised for its clarity and precision, and it helped to establish the orchestra's reputation as one of the leading ensembles in the field of Baroque music. Over the years, the Geraint Jones Orchestra performed at many of the major concert halls and festivals throughout Europe, including the Edinburgh Festival, the Salzburg Festival, and the BBC Proms. The orchestra also made several recordings for the Decca label, including a highly acclaimed recording of Handel's Water Music. In addition to its performances of Baroque and early Classical music, the Geraint Jones Orchestra also collaborated with contemporary composers, including Benjamin Britten and Michael Tippett. The orchestra premiered several works by these composers, including Britten's Cantata Academica and Tippett's Concerto for Double String Orchestra. Despite its success, the Geraint Jones Orchestra was disbanded in 1971 due to financial difficulties. However, the orchestra's legacy lives on through its recordings and the many musicians who were inspired by its historically informed approach to Baroque music. Geraint Jones himself continued to work as a conductor and organist until his death in 1996. He was widely regarded as one of the leading interpreters of Baroque music of his generation, and his contributions to the field continue to be celebrated today.More....
