The Northwest Symphony Orchestra (NSO) is a classical music ensemble based in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States. Founded in 1987, the orchestra has become a prominent fixture in the local music scene, known for its high-quality performances and commitment to community outreach. The NSO was founded by a group of musicians who were passionate about classical music and wanted to create an ensemble that would showcase the talents of local musicians. The founding members included conductor Anthony Spain, violinist and concertmaster Marjorie Kransberg-Talvi, and cellist and principal cellist David Sabee. From its inception, the NSO has been dedicated to providing high-quality performances of classical music to audiences in the Pacific Northwest. The orchestra's repertoire includes works by some of the greatest composers in history, including Beethoven, Mozart, Brahms, and Tchaikovsky. Over the years, the NSO has grown in size and reputation, attracting some of the most talented musicians in the region. Today, the orchestra is made up of over 70 musicians, including both professional and amateur players. One of the NSO's main goals is to make classical music accessible to everyone, regardless of their background or experience with the genre. To this end, the orchestra has developed a number of community outreach programs, including educational concerts for schoolchildren and free performances in public spaces. The NSO has also been recognized for its excellence in performance, receiving numerous awards and accolades over the years. In 2010, the orchestra was awarded the prestigious ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming, which recognizes ensembles that demonstrate a commitment to performing contemporary and innovative works. Some of the NSO's most notable performances include its annual holiday concert, which features a mix of classical and popular holiday music, as well as its annual summer concert series, which takes place in outdoor venues throughout the region. In addition to its regular performances, the NSO has also collaborated with a number of other organizations and artists over the years. In 2015, the orchestra performed with the Seattle Symphony in a joint concert that was hailed as a major success.
