Gruber & Maklar Guitar Duo is a classical music ensemble that has been captivating audiences with their unique sound and virtuosic performances for over two decades. The duo consists of Austrian guitarist Martin Gruber and Slovenian guitarist Peter Maklar, who have been playing together since 1998. Martin Gruber was born in Austria in 1972 and began playing the guitar at the age of 10. He studied at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna and later at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg. He has won numerous awards and competitions, including the International Guitar Competition in Vienna and the International Guitar Competition in Kutna Hora, Czech Republic. Peter Maklar was born in Slovenia in 1973 and started playing the guitar at the age of 8. He studied at the Academy of Music in Ljubljana and later at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg. He has also won several awards and competitions, including the International Guitar Competition in Kutna Hora and the International Guitar Competition in Gorizia, Italy. The duo first met in Salzburg in 1998 and quickly discovered a shared passion for classical guitar music. They began playing together and soon formed Gruber & Maklar Guitar Duo. Since then, they have performed extensively throughout Europe, Asia, and the United States, earning critical acclaim and a devoted following. One of the highlights of the duo's career was their performance at the prestigious Guitar Foundation of America International Concert Artist Competition in 2002. They were the first guitar duo to ever win the competition, which is considered one of the most prestigious guitar competitions in the world. The win helped to establish the duo as one of the leading classical guitar ensembles of their generation. In addition to their concert performances, Gruber & Maklar Guitar Duo have also released several highly acclaimed recordings. Their debut album, "Duo Recital," was released in 2001 and featured works by composers such as Fernando Sor, Mauro Giuliani, and Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco. Their second album, "Duo Virtuoso," was released in 2005 and included works by composers such as Johann Sebastian Bach, Isaac Albéniz, and Manuel de Falla. The duo's repertoire is diverse and includes works from a wide range of composers and styles. They are particularly known for their interpretations of works by Spanish and Latin American composers, such as Joaquín Rodrigo, Isaac Albéniz, and Astor Piazzolla. They also perform works by contemporary composers, such as Roland Dyens and Carlo Domeniconi. Gruber & Maklar Guitar Duo have performed at some of the most prestigious concert halls and festivals in the world, including the Carnegie Hall in New York, the Konzerthaus in Vienna, and the Festival Internacional de Guitarra de Morelia in Mexico.
