Born in Sofia, Bulgaria in 1958, Dokovska began playing the piano at the age of five and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. She studied at the National School of Music in Sofia, where she was mentored by the esteemed Bulgarian pianist and pedagogue, Julia Ganeva. In 1978, Dokovska won first prize at the Young Artists Competition in Sofia, which launched her career as a soloist. She went on to study at the Moscow Conservatory with legendary pianist and teacher, Lev Vlassenko, and later at the Juilliard School in New York City with Adele Marcus. Dokovska’s training with these renowned musicians helped shape her unique style and approach to the piano. Throughout her career, Dokovska has performed as a soloist with major orchestras around the world, including the New York Philharmonic, the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Moscow Philharmonic, and the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra. She has also given recitals at prestigious venues such as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and the Kennedy Center. Her repertoire includes works by classical masters such as Beethoven, Mozart, and Chopin, as well as contemporary composers like George Crumb and Sofia Gubaidulina. One of Dokovska’s most notable performances was her debut with the New York Philharmonic in 1986, where she played Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 under the baton of Zubin Mehta. The performance was met with critical acclaim, and Dokovska was praised for her “sensitive and virtuosic” interpretation of the piece. She has since returned to perform with the New York Philharmonic on several occasions, cementing her reputation as one of the world’s leading pianists. In addition to her career as a performer, Dokovska is also a dedicated educator. She has been a faculty member at the Mannes School of Music in New York City since 1993, where she teaches piano and chamber music. She has also served as a guest professor at universities and conservatories around the world, including the Moscow Conservatory, the Royal Academy of Music in London, and the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. Dokovska’s commitment to education extends beyond the classroom. In 1999, she founded the New York Piano Festival, which provides young pianists with the opportunity to perform in public and receive feedback from renowned musicians. The festival has since become a major event in the classical music world, attracting participants from around the globe. Throughout her career, Dokovska has received numerous awards and honors for her contributions to the world of classical music. In 1991, she was awarded the Bulgarian Order of Cyril and Methodius, one of the highest honors given by the Bulgarian government. She has also been recognized by the National Arts Club in New York City, the Bulgarian Ministry of Culture, and the Mannes School of Music, among others.
