Role:EnsemblePeriod:BaroqueGenre:OrchestralSymphonyNew Dutch Academy (NDA) is a classical music ensemble based in The Hague, Netherlands. Founded in 2002 by conductor and violinist Simon Murphy, the ensemble specializes in performing music from the Baroque and Classical periods on period instruments. Simon Murphy, who studied at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague, founded NDA with the aim of exploring the rich musical heritage of the Netherlands and bringing it to a wider audience. The ensemble's name reflects this mission, as it pays homage to the Dutch Golden Age of the 17th century, when the country was a center of artistic and cultural innovation. The core members of NDA are a group of highly skilled musicians who specialize in playing period instruments. These include violins, violas, cellos, double basses, flutes, oboes, bassoons, horns, trumpets, and timpani. The ensemble also collaborates with guest soloists and vocalists, as well as other ensembles and orchestras. Over the years, NDA has gained a reputation for its innovative and dynamic performances, which combine historical accuracy with a fresh and modern approach. The ensemble's repertoire includes works by well-known composers such as Bach, Handel, Mozart, and Haydn, as well as lesser-known Dutch composers such as Willem de Fesch, Johann Schenk, and Unico Wilhelm van Wassenaer. One of the highlights of NDA's career was its performance at the 2006 Holland Festival, where it presented a program of music by Dutch composers from the 18th century. The concert, which was broadcast live on Dutch television, received critical acclaim and helped to raise the profile of the ensemble. Another notable performance was NDA's collaboration with the Dutch National Ballet in 2011, where it provided live music for a production of George Balanchine's ballet "Jewels". The ensemble's sensitive and nuanced playing was praised by critics and audiences alike, and helped to showcase the versatility of period instruments in a modern context. In addition to its live performances, NDA has also released several recordings, including a series of CDs on the Dutch label PentaTone. These recordings have received numerous awards and nominations, including a Diapason d'Or and a Gramophone Award. One of NDA's most ambitious projects to date was its performance of Handel's "Messiah" in 2014, which was presented in a historically informed version that aimed to recreate the sound and style of the work as it would have been heard in Handel's time. The performance, which featured a large choir and orchestra, was praised for its clarity, energy, and emotional impact. In addition to its performances and recordings, NDA is also committed to education and outreach. The ensemble regularly gives masterclasses and workshops for young musicians, and has developed a program called "Baroque in the Classroom" that introduces schoolchildren to the music and culture of the Baroque period. Overall, New Dutch Academy is a dynamic and innovative ensemble that is dedicated to exploring the rich musical heritage of the Netherlands and bringing it to a wider audience. With its commitment to historical accuracy, artistic excellence, and educational outreach, the ensemble is a valuable and inspiring presence in the world of classical music.More....
