Role:EnsembleLudus Modalis is a French classical music ensemble that specializes in the performance of medieval and Renaissance music. The group was founded in 2005 by the French countertenor Bruno Boterf, who serves as its artistic director. Since its inception, Ludus Modalis has gained international recognition for its innovative interpretations of early music, and has become one of the leading ensembles in the field. Bruno Boterf was born in 1960 in Paris, France. He began his musical training as a boy soprano in the choir of the Notre-Dame de Paris cathedral, where he developed a love for early music. He later studied musicology at the Sorbonne, and began performing as a countertenor in the 1980s. Boterf quickly gained a reputation as one of the leading countertenors of his generation, and has performed with many of the world's leading early music ensembles, including Les Arts Florissants, La Chapelle Royale, and the Ensemble Organum. In 2005, Boterf founded Ludus Modalis with the aim of exploring the rich repertoire of medieval and Renaissance music. The ensemble takes its name from the Latin term for "modal play," which refers to the use of different musical modes in early music. Ludus Modalis is known for its innovative interpretations of early music, which often incorporate elements of improvisation and experimentation. The ensemble's performances are characterized by their energy, spontaneity, and emotional intensity. Since its founding, Ludus Modalis has performed at many of the world's leading early music festivals, including the Festival d'Ambronay, the Festival de Saintes, and the Festival de Sablé. The ensemble has also toured extensively throughout Europe, Asia, and North America, and has released several critically acclaimed recordings on the Ricercar label. One of Ludus Modalis's most notable performances was its 2010 concert at the Festival de Saintes, where the ensemble performed a program of music by the 16th-century composer Orlando di Lasso. The concert was widely praised for its virtuosity and emotional depth, and cemented Ludus Modalis's reputation as one of the leading ensembles in the field of early music. In addition to its performances, Ludus Modalis has also been recognized for its contributions to the field of early music scholarship. The ensemble has collaborated with many leading musicologists and historians, and has contributed to the publication of several important editions of early music manuscripts. In 2015, Ludus Modalis was awarded the prestigious Prix du Patrimoine by the French Ministry of Culture in recognition of its contributions to the preservation and promotion of early music. Ludus Modalis's repertoire is wide-ranging, encompassing music from the medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque periods. The ensemble's performances often feature works by lesser-known composers, as well as innovative arrangements of well-known pieces. Ludus Modalis is particularly known for its interpretations of sacred music, and has performed many works by composers such as Josquin des Prez, Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina, and Tomás Luis de Victoria. In conclusion, Ludus Modalis is a French classical music ensemble that specializes in the performance of medieval and Renaissance music. Founded in 2005 by the countertenor Bruno Boterf, the ensemble has gained international recognition for its innovative interpretations of early music, and has become one of the leading ensembles in the field.More....
