He was born on August 22, 1922, in Chicago, Illinois, to Russian immigrant parents. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist, which influenced his interest in music from a young age. Sopkin began his musical journey by learning the violin at the age of six. He later switched to the viola, which became his primary instrument. He studied at the Chicago Musical College and the Juilliard School of Music, where he received his Bachelor of Music degree. In 1943, Sopkin joined the Chicago Symphony Orchestra as a violist. He played with the orchestra for 35 years, during which he became one of the most respected musicians in the ensemble. He also served as the principal violist for the orchestra from 1953 to 1958. Sopkin was known for his exceptional musicianship and his ability to bring out the best in his instrument. He was a versatile musician who played a wide range of music, from classical to contemporary. He was also a prolific chamber musician and performed with various ensembles, including the Chicago String Quartet, the Fine Arts Quartet, and the New York String Quartet. One of Sopkin's most significant achievements was his role in the founding of the Chicago String Quartet in 1964.
