The Pacific Mozart Ensemble is a classical music group that was founded in 1980 in the San Francisco Bay Area. The group is known for its unique blend of classical and contemporary music, as well as its commitment to promoting music education and community outreach. The group was founded by Lynne Morrow, a renowned conductor and music educator who had previously worked with the San Francisco Symphony and the San Francisco Opera. Morrow was inspired to start the Pacific Mozart Ensemble after attending a performance of Mozart's Requiem, which she felt was lacking in emotional depth and expression. She wanted to create a group that would bring a fresh perspective to classical music, and that would be open to exploring new and innovative approaches to performance. The Pacific Mozart Ensemble began as a small group of singers who met in Morrow's living room to rehearse. Over time, the group grew in size and reputation, and began to perform at local venues and events. In 1983, the group was invited to perform at the San Francisco Symphony's annual holiday concert, which was a major milestone for the ensemble. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, the Pacific Mozart Ensemble continued to grow and evolve. The group began to incorporate more contemporary music into its repertoire, and experimented with different styles and genres. In 1992, the group released its first album, "A Cappella Christmas," which featured a mix of traditional and modern holiday songs. One of the highlights of the Pacific Mozart Ensemble's career came in 1995, when the group was invited to perform at the White House for President Bill Clinton and First Lady Hillary Clinton. The group performed a selection of classical and contemporary pieces, including a rendition of "America the Beautiful" that was arranged by Morrow specifically for the occasion. In the years that followed, the Pacific Mozart Ensemble continued to perform at major events and venues around the world. The group performed at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, and has also performed at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., and the Sydney Opera House in Australia. In addition to its performance work, the Pacific Mozart Ensemble has also been committed to music education and community outreach. The group has worked with local schools and community organizations to provide music education and performance opportunities to young people, and has also collaborated with other artists and musicians to create new and innovative works. Over the years, the Pacific Mozart Ensemble has received numerous awards and accolades for its work. In 2003, the group was awarded the Chorus America/ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming, which recognizes ensembles that demonstrate a commitment to innovative and diverse programming. The group has also been nominated for several Grammy Awards, and has won multiple awards from the International Association of Jazz Educators and the National Association of Music Merchants. Today, the Pacific Mozart Ensemble continues to be a leading voice in the world of classical and contemporary music. The group remains committed to exploring new and innovative approaches to performance, and to promoting music education and community outreach. With its unique blend of classical and contemporary music, the Pacific Mozart Ensemble is sure to remain a beloved and influential force in the world of music for years to come.
