He was the youngest of three children and grew up in a family that was passionate about music. His father was a pianist, and his mother was a singer, so it was no surprise that Dieter showed an interest in music from a young age. Dieter began his musical education at the age of six when he started taking piano lessons. He quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument and progressed rapidly. By the time he was a teenager, he was already performing in public and had won several local competitions. In 1968, Dieter was accepted into the prestigious Berlin University of the Arts, where he studied under the renowned pianist and teacher, Karl-Heinz Kämmerling. Kämmerling recognized Dieter's exceptional talent and took him under his wing, mentoring him and helping him to develop his skills as a pianist. During his time at the university, Dieter also had the opportunity to study with other great pianists, including Wilhelm Kempff and Claudio Arrau. These experiences helped him to refine his technique and deepen his understanding of the music he was playing. After graduating from the university in 1972, Dieter began his professional career as a concert pianist. He quickly gained a reputation as a virtuoso performer, known for his technical precision and emotional depth. He performed extensively throughout Europe, Asia, and North America, playing with some of the world's leading orchestras and conductors. One of the highlights of Dieter's career was his performance of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5 with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra in 1985. The concert was a huge success, and Dieter received a standing ovation from the audience. The performance was later released as a live recording, which became one of his most popular albums. Over the course of his career, Dieter received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to classical music. In 1992, he was awarded the Order of Merit of Berlin, one of the highest honors that can be bestowed upon a citizen of the city. He was also a recipient of the German Music Prize, the International Beethoven Prize, and the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. Despite his success as a performer, Dieter was also committed to teaching and mentoring young musicians. He taught at several universities and conservatories throughout his career, including the Berlin University of the Arts, the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler, and the Mozarteum University of Salzburg. Dieter was known for his dedication to his craft and his tireless work ethic. He practiced for hours every day, even when he was on tour, and was always striving to improve his technique and interpretation of the music he played. He was also known for his generosity and kindness, and was beloved by his colleagues and students. Sadly, Dieter passed away on June 15, 2015, at the age of 65. His death was a great loss to the classical music world, but his legacy lives on through his recordings and the many musicians he inspired and mentored throughout his career. He will always be remembered as one of the greatest pianists of his generation, and a true ambassador for classical music.More....
