CanadaGenre:ChamberOrchestralLa Pietà is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1997 by violinist and conductor Angèle Dubeau. The ensemble is based in Montreal, Canada, and is made up of all-female musicians who are dedicated to performing classical music with passion and precision. Angèle Dubeau, who serves as the ensemble's artistic director and conductor, has been a prominent figure in the Canadian classical music scene for many years. She has performed as a soloist with major orchestras around the world and has recorded over 40 albums. In founding La Pietà, Dubeau sought to create an ensemble that would showcase the talents of female musicians and bring a fresh perspective to classical music. The ensemble's name, La Pietà, is inspired by the famous Venetian orphanage where Antonio Vivaldi taught and composed music for young girls. Like Vivaldi, Dubeau saw the potential in young female musicians and wanted to create an environment where they could thrive and develop their skills. La Pietà's core ensemble consists of 11 musicians, all of whom are accomplished performers in their own right. The ensemble is made up of violinists, violists, cellists, and a double bassist, and they perform a wide range of classical music repertoire, from Baroque to contemporary. Over the years, La Pietà has become known for their dynamic and engaging performances, which often feature innovative programming and collaborations with other artists. The ensemble has performed at major concert halls and festivals around the world, including Carnegie Hall in New York, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Edinburgh International Festival. One of La Pietà's most notable performances was their 2010 concert at the Montreal International Jazz Festival, where they performed a program of jazz-inspired classical music. The concert was a huge success and showcased the ensemble's versatility and creativity. In addition to their live performances, La Pietà has also recorded numerous albums, many of which have received critical acclaim. Their 2002 album, "Portrait: Angèle Dubeau and La Pietà," won a Juno Award (the Canadian equivalent of a Grammy) for Best Classical Album of the Year. The ensemble has also collaborated with a number of other artists on their recordings, including singer-songwriter Patrick Watson and pianist Alain Lefèvre. La Pietà has received numerous awards and honors over the years, including the prestigious Prix Opus for Concert of the Year in 2003 and 2011. The ensemble has also been recognized for their contributions to Canadian music, receiving the National Arts Centre Award in 2012. In addition to their performances and recordings, La Pietà is also committed to music education and outreach. The ensemble regularly performs for school groups and participates in community events, and they have established a scholarship program to support young female musicians. Overall, La Pietà is a dynamic and innovative classical music ensemble that has made a significant impact on the Canadian music scene and beyond. With their passion for music and commitment to excellence, they continue to inspire audiences and musicians alike.More....
