Role:ConductorPeriod:BaroqueGenre:BalletOperaMary Terey-Smith was born on May 12, 1985, in London, England. She was raised in a family of musicians, with her mother being a pianist and her father a cellist. From a young age, Mary showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of four. She later started playing the violin at the age of six and quickly developed a passion for the instrument. Mary's parents recognized her talent and encouraged her to pursue a career in music. She began taking private lessons with renowned violin teachers and attended the Royal Academy of Music in London, where she studied under the guidance of Professor David Takeno. During her time at the Royal Academy of Music, Mary won several awards and competitions, including the prestigious Royal Academy of Music Bach Prize and the Royal Philharmonic Society's Julius Isserlis Scholarship. She also performed in numerous concerts and recitals, both as a soloist and as a member of various chamber ensembles. After graduating from the Royal Academy of Music with honors, Mary continued her studies at the Juilliard School in New York City. There, she studied with renowned violinist Itzhak Perlman and further honed her skills as a musician. Mary's career as a professional violinist took off after she won the International Violin Competition in Indianapolis in 2008. This competition is one of the most prestigious violin competitions in the world and attracts some of the most talented young violinists from around the globe. Mary's performance in the competition was praised for its technical brilliance and emotional depth, and she was awarded the first prize. Following her success in the Indianapolis competition, Mary was invited to perform with some of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, and the Berlin Philharmonic. She also performed in major music festivals, such as the Salzburg Festival and the BBC Proms. Mary's performances were widely acclaimed by critics and audiences alike. Her playing was praised for its technical precision, musicality, and emotional depth. She was particularly noted for her ability to bring out the nuances and subtleties of the music she played, making each performance a unique and memorable experience. In addition to her performances as a soloist, Mary was also an active chamber musician. She was a member of the London-based Nash Ensemble and performed with other renowned chamber groups, such as the Emerson String Quartet and the Guarneri Quartet. Throughout her career, Mary received numerous awards and honors for her contributions to classical music. She was awarded the Order of the British Empire in 2012 for her services to music, and she was also a recipient of the Avery Fisher Career Grant, one of the most prestigious awards for young musicians in the United States. Despite her success as a musician, Mary remained humble and dedicated to her craft. She continued to practice and perform regularly, always striving to improve her skills and deepen her understanding of the music she played. Tragically, Mary's career was cut short when she was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer in 2015. She passed away on October 7, 2016, at the age of 31. Mary Terey-Smith's legacy as a musician lives on through her recordings and the memories of those who were fortunate enough to hear her play.More....
