Matthias Kaul is a renowned percussionist, composer, and improviser in the world of contemporary classical music. Born in 1959 in Germany, Kaul grew up in a family of musicians and was exposed to music from a young age. He began playing the drums at the age of six and later studied percussion at the Musikhochschule in Cologne. Kaul's career as a musician began in the 1980s when he became a member of the Ensemble Musikfabrik, a contemporary music ensemble based in Cologne. He quickly established himself as a versatile and innovative percussionist, known for his ability to play a wide range of instruments and his willingness to experiment with new sounds and techniques. Over the years, Kaul has collaborated with many of the leading composers and performers in the contemporary classical music world. He has premiered numerous works by composers such as Helmut Lachenmann, Karlheinz Stockhausen, and Mauricio Kagel, and has worked with performers such as John Cage, Steve Reich, and Pierre Boulez. Kaul's performances are known for their intensity and energy, as well as their technical virtuosity. He is particularly skilled at playing unconventional percussion instruments, such as found objects and household items, and is known for his ability to create complex rhythms and textures using these instruments. In addition to his work as a performer, Kaul is also a prolific composer and improviser. He has written numerous works for percussion, as well as for other instruments and ensembles, and has collaborated with dancers, visual artists, and poets on interdisciplinary projects. In 1992, he was awarded the Kranichsteiner Musikpreis, one of the most prestigious awards for contemporary music in Germany.
