Born on August 22, 1969, in Toronto, Canada, Epperson grew up in a family of musicians. His father, Victor Epperson, was a violinist, and his mother, Mary Epperson, was a pianist. From a young age, Epperson was exposed to classical music and began playing the cello at the age of six. Epperson's talent was evident from an early age, and he quickly became a prodigy. He studied at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto and later at the Juilliard School in New York City. Epperson's teachers included some of the most renowned cellists of the time, including Leonard Rose, Harvey Shapiro, and Yo-Yo Ma. Epperson's career as a professional cellist began in the early 1990s when he joined the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. He quickly established himself as a talented musician and was soon promoted to the position of principal cellist. Epperson's time with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra was marked by numerous successful performances, including a critically acclaimed performance of Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 5. In 1996, Epperson left the Toronto Symphony Orchestra to join the Canadian Opera Company Orchestra. He remained with the company for several years, during which time he performed in numerous productions, including Verdi's Aida and Puccini's La Bohème. Epperson's career took a significant turn in 2000 when he was invited to join the renowned Canadian string quartet, the Canadian Brass. Epperson's addition to the group marked a new era for the quartet, which had previously been known for its brass instrumentation. With Epperson on board, the Canadian Brass began incorporating more string music into their performances, creating a unique sound that was both innovative and captivating. Epperson's time with the Canadian Brass was marked by numerous successful performances and recordings. The group's 2003 album, Bach: The Art of Fugue, which featured Epperson on cello, was particularly well-received and earned the group a Juno Award, Canada's highest music award. In addition to his work with the Canadian Brass, Epperson has also performed as a soloist with numerous orchestras around the world. He has performed with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the National Arts Centre Orchestra, the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, and the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, among others. Epperson's talent as a cellist has earned him numerous awards and accolades throughout his career. In addition to the Juno Award he received with the Canadian Brass, Epperson has also been awarded the Canada Council for the Arts' prestigious Virginia Parker Prize and the Toronto Arts Award for Music. Epperson's contributions to the music industry extend beyond his performances as a cellist. He is also a respected music educator and has taught at the University of Toronto, the Glenn Gould School, and the Royal Conservatory of Music. Epperson is known for his dedication to music education and has worked to inspire and mentor young musicians throughout his career. In addition to his work as a cellist and music educator, Epperson is also a composer and arranger.
