Arco Chamber Orchestra is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 2001 by a group of young musicians who shared a passion for chamber music. The ensemble is based in New York City and is known for its innovative programming and virtuosic performances. The founding members of Arco Chamber Orchestra were violinists David Chan and Kristin Lee, violist Colin Brookes, and cellist Eric Jacobsen. All four musicians had already established themselves as talented performers in the classical music world, having studied at prestigious institutions such as The Juilliard School and the Curtis Institute of Music. From the beginning, Arco Chamber Orchestra set out to explore the rich repertoire of chamber music, from the Baroque era to contemporary works. The ensemble's name, "arco," is Italian for "bow," a reference to the string instruments that are the backbone of chamber music. Over the years, Arco Chamber Orchestra has expanded its membership to include some of the most talented young musicians in the country. The ensemble's current roster includes violinists Kristin Lee, Tessa Lark, and Francisco Fullana, violist Colin Brookes, cellist Eric Jacobsen, and bassist Max Zeugner. One of the highlights of Arco Chamber Orchestra's early years was its debut performance at the Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall in 2003. The ensemble performed a program of works by Bach, Mozart, and Mendelssohn, earning rave reviews from critics and audiences alike. Since then, Arco Chamber Orchestra has performed at some of the most prestigious venues in the world, including Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and the Royal Albert Hall in London. The ensemble has also collaborated with some of the most renowned musicians in the classical music world, including pianist Emanuel Ax, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, and violinist Itzhak Perlman. In addition to its performances, Arco Chamber Orchestra has also been recognized for its recordings. The ensemble's debut album, "Arco Chamber Orchestra: Live from Lincoln Center," was released in 2004 and received critical acclaim. The album features works by Bach, Mozart, and Mendelssohn, as well as a world premiere recording of a work by composer David Ludwig. Arco Chamber Orchestra has also been recognized for its commitment to education and outreach. The ensemble has performed in schools and community centers across the country, introducing young people to the joys of classical music. In addition, Arco Chamber Orchestra has established a residency program at the University of South Carolina, where the ensemble works with students and faculty to develop new works and explore the chamber music repertoire. In recent years, Arco Chamber Orchestra has continued to push the boundaries of chamber music, exploring new works and collaborating with artists from a variety of genres. The ensemble's 2019 album, "Visions and Variations," features works by contemporary composers such as Caroline Shaw and Nico Muhly, as well as a new arrangement of a traditional Scottish folk song. Arco Chamber Orchestra has also been recognized for its commitment to diversity and inclusion in classical music. The ensemble has worked to promote the works of female and minority composers, and has collaborated with artists from a variety of cultural backgrounds. Overall, Arco Chamber Orchestra has established itself as one of the most innovative and exciting ensembles in the classical music world.
