Robert Schunk was born on May 10, 1955, in New York City. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a professional pianist and his mother a singer. From a young age, Schunk showed a natural talent for music and began taking piano lessons at the age of five. As he grew older, Schunk became interested in classical music and began studying voice. He attended the Juilliard School in New York City, where he studied under renowned vocal coach, Margaret Harshaw. During his time at Juilliard, Schunk won several awards and competitions, including the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions in 1979. After graduating from Juilliard, Schunk began his professional career as an opera singer. He made his debut with the New York City Opera in 1980, singing the role of Count Almaviva in Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro. This performance was widely praised, and Schunk quickly became known for his powerful and expressive voice. Over the next few years, Schunk performed with several major opera companies, including the Metropolitan Opera, the San Francisco Opera, and the Lyric Opera of Chicago. He also appeared in numerous concerts and recitals, showcasing his versatility as a performer. One of Schunk's most notable performances was his portrayal of the title character in Wagner's Parsifal at the Metropolitan Opera in 1991. This performance was widely acclaimed, with critics praising Schunk's powerful voice and emotional depth. Throughout his career, Schunk received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to classical music. In 1993, he was awarded the Richard Tucker Award, which is given annually to an outstanding American opera singer. He was also inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2001. Despite his success, Schunk remained humble and dedicated to his craft. He continued to perform and teach voice until his retirement in 2015. Today, he is remembered as one of the greatest American opera singers of his generation, with a legacy that continues to inspire and influence young musicians around the world.
