Clair-Obscur Saxophone Quartet is a classical music ensemble that has been captivating audiences with their unique sound and innovative approach to music since their formation in 1989. The quartet consists of four talented saxophonists: Jean-Marc Liet, Arno Bornkamp, Harry Cherrin, and Alban Wesly. The group was founded in Amsterdam, Netherlands, by Jean-Marc Liet and Arno Bornkamp, who were both studying at the Sweelinck Conservatory at the time. They were soon joined by Harry Cherrin and Alban Wesly, and the quartet began to gain recognition for their exceptional musicianship and dynamic performances. One of the defining characteristics of Clair-Obscur Saxophone Quartet is their commitment to exploring the full range of the saxophone's capabilities. They are known for their ability to seamlessly blend different styles and genres of music, from classical to jazz to contemporary, and for their innovative arrangements of both traditional and modern compositions. Over the years, Clair-Obscur Saxophone Quartet has performed at some of the world's most prestigious concert halls and festivals, including the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Salzburg Festival. They have also collaborated with a wide range of musicians and composers, including the Kronos Quartet, the Arditti Quartet, and the Dutch composer Louis Andriessen. One of the highlights of Clair-Obscur Saxophone Quartet's career was their performance at the 2002 World Saxophone Congress in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The group was awarded the prestigious Adolphe Sax Prize for their outstanding contribution to the world of saxophone music, and their performance was hailed as one of the highlights of the entire congress. In addition to their live performances, Clair-Obscur Saxophone Quartet has also released several critically acclaimed recordings. Their debut album, "Saxophone Quartets," was released in 1993 and featured works by composers such as Alexander Glazunov, Jean Francaix, and Gyorgy Ligeti. They have since released several more albums, including "Saxophone Concertos" and "Saxophone Impressions," which showcase their versatility and range as musicians.
