The Crossing is a Grammy-winning professional chamber choir based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Founded in 2005 by conductor Donald Nally, the ensemble has quickly become one of the most respected and innovative choral groups in the world. Donald Nally was born in 1960 in Cincinnati, Ohio. He studied music at Westminster Choir College and the University of Illinois, where he earned his doctorate in choral conducting. Nally has served as the director of choral organizations at Northwestern University, the University of Illinois, and the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. In 2005, Nally founded The Crossing with the goal of creating a new kind of choral ensemble that would push the boundaries of traditional choral music. The group's name comes from the idea of crossing boundaries, both musically and culturally. The Crossing's repertoire is diverse and often includes works by contemporary composers. The ensemble has premiered over 100 new works, many of which were commissioned specifically for The Crossing. The group has also collaborated with a wide range of artists, including the Bang on a Can All-Stars, the International Contemporary Ensemble, and the American Composers Orchestra. One of The Crossing's most notable performances was their 2018 world premiere of Michael Gordon's "Anonymous Man" at the Park Avenue Armory in New York City. The piece was a multimedia work that combined choral music with video projections and live performance. The New York Times called the performance "a stunning feat of theatrical and musical coordination." The Crossing has also been recognized for their recordings. In 2018, the ensemble won a Grammy Award for Best Choral Performance for their album "The Fifth Century," which featured works by Gavin Bryars and premiered at the Philadelphia Episcopal Cathedral in 2014. In addition to their performances and recordings, The Crossing is also committed to education and outreach. The ensemble regularly works with students and young musicians, offering workshops and masterclasses. The group also hosts an annual festival called "The Month of Moderns," which features performances of new and experimental choral works. Overall, The Crossing has established itself as one of the most innovative and exciting choral ensembles in the world. With their commitment to new music and their dedication to pushing the boundaries of traditional choral music, The Crossing is sure to continue making waves in the classical music world for years to come.
