He later went on to study composition at the Athens Conservatory, where he received his diploma in 1999. After completing his studies, Minakakis moved to the United States to pursue further education in music. He enrolled at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, where he studied with renowned composers such as Lee Hyla and Michael Gandolfi. He received his Master of Music degree in composition from the conservatory in 2002. Throughout his career, Minakakis composed a wide range of works, including orchestral pieces, chamber music, and vocal music. His music was characterized by its complex rhythms, intricate harmonies, and use of extended techniques. He was also known for his use of unconventional instruments, such as the prepared piano and the toy piano. One of Minakakis's most notable works is his orchestral piece, "The Gaze of the Sphinx." The piece was commissioned by the Boston Modern Orchestra Project and premiered in 2005. It was inspired by the myth of the Sphinx, and the music reflects the mysterious and enigmatic nature of the creature. The piece features a wide range of textures and colors, and it showcases Minakakis's skill in orchestration. Another notable work by Minakakis is his chamber piece, "The Distance of the Moon." The piece was inspired by the short story of the same name by Italo Calvino, and it was premiered by the Talea Ensemble in 2010.
