Born on January 18, 1968, in Odessa, Ukraine, Gerello grew up in a family of musicians and was exposed to classical music from a young age. His father was a conductor and his mother was a pianist, and they both encouraged him to pursue a career in music. Gerello began his formal music education at the Odessa State Conservatory, where he studied under the guidance of renowned vocal coach Tamara Novichenko. He quickly distinguished himself as a talented singer, and in 1990, he won first prize at the All-Union Competition of Vocalists in Moscow. This victory launched his career and led to his debut performance at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow. Over the next few years, Gerello continued to build his reputation as a rising star in the world of opera.
