Role:EnsemblePeriod:ContemporaryGenre:ChamberThe FLUX Quartet is a renowned classical music ensemble that has been captivating audiences with their innovative and dynamic performances for over two decades. The quartet was founded in 1996 by four talented musicians who shared a passion for contemporary classical music and a desire to push the boundaries of traditional chamber music. The founding members of the FLUX Quartet were Tom Chiu (violin), Conrad Harris (violin), Max Mandel (viola), and Felix Fan (cello). All four musicians had extensive experience performing in various classical music ensembles and had a deep appreciation for the works of contemporary composers. The quartet's name, FLUX, is derived from the Latin word "fluxus," which means "flow." This name reflects the quartet's commitment to exploring the fluidity and evolution of contemporary classical music. From the beginning, the FLUX Quartet set out to challenge the conventions of traditional chamber music by commissioning and performing new works by contemporary composers. The quartet's repertoire includes works by some of the most innovative and influential composers of the 20th and 21st centuries, including John Cage, Morton Feldman, and Steve Reich. One of the FLUX Quartet's most notable performances was their 1999 debut at the Lincoln Center's Great Performers Series. The quartet's performance of Morton Feldman's "String Quartet No. 2" received critical acclaim and established the quartet as a leading force in contemporary classical music. Over the years, the FLUX Quartet has continued to push the boundaries of contemporary classical music with their innovative performances and collaborations with other artists. In 2003, the quartet collaborated with the Merce Cunningham Dance Company to perform John Cage's "Four3" as part of the company's 50th-anniversary celebration. The FLUX Quartet has also been recognized for their contributions to contemporary classical music with numerous awards and honors. In 2002, the quartet was awarded the ASCAP/Chamber Music America Award for Adventurous Programming. The quartet has also been awarded grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the New York State Council on the Arts. In addition to their performances and collaborations, the FLUX Quartet is also committed to educating and inspiring the next generation of classical musicians. The quartet has conducted masterclasses and workshops at universities and music schools around the world, sharing their knowledge and expertise with aspiring musicians. Today, the FLUX Quartet continues to be a leading force in contemporary classical music, captivating audiences with their innovative performances and commitment to pushing the boundaries of traditional chamber music. With their passion for new and challenging works, the quartet is sure to continue inspiring and exciting audiences for years to come.More....
