Gergely Madaras is a Hungarian conductor and pianist who has made a name for himself in the classical music world. Born on May 17, 1984, in Budapest, Hungary, Madaras showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. He went on to study at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest, where he received his degree in piano performance. After completing his studies, Madaras began to focus on conducting and quickly gained recognition for his talent. In 2007, he won the International Conducting Competition in Besançon, France, which led to his appointment as assistant conductor of the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France in Paris. He also served as assistant conductor of the Budapest Festival Orchestra under the direction of Iván Fischer. Madaras has since conducted many of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestre National de France, the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. He has also worked with some of the most renowned soloists of our time, including Lang Lang, Maxim Vengerov, and Yuja Wang. One of Madaras's most notable performances was his debut with the London Philharmonic Orchestra in 2013, where he conducted a program of works by Bartók, Kodály, and Ligeti. The performance was met with critical acclaim, with The Guardian describing Madaras as "a conductor of real promise." In addition to his work as a conductor, Madaras is also an accomplished pianist. He has performed as a soloist with many orchestras, including the Budapest Festival Orchestra, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, and the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra. He has also recorded several albums as a pianist, including a recording of Liszt's Piano Concerto No. 1 with the Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra. Madaras has received numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In addition to his win at the International Conducting Competition in Besançon, he was also a finalist in the 2010 Donatella Flick Conducting Competition in London. He has been awarded the Junior Prima Prize, the highest honor for young artists in Hungary, and was named a Rising Star by the European Concert Hall Organization in 2017. Madaras is known for his innovative programming and his commitment to contemporary music. He has conducted many world premieres and has worked closely with composers such as György Kurtág and Péter Eötvös. He is also a passionate advocate for music education and has worked with young musicians in Hungary and around the world. In 2019, Madaras was appointed music director of the Orchestre Dijon Bourgogne in France, where he has already made a significant impact. His tenure has been marked by a series of successful concerts and innovative programming, including a performance of Mahler's Symphony No. 2 that was hailed as "a triumph" by the French press.
