The Philharmonia Orchestra is a world-renowned classical music ensemble based in London, England. Founded in 1945, the orchestra has become one of the most respected and acclaimed orchestras in the world, known for its exceptional musicianship and innovative programming. The Philharmonia Orchestra was founded by Walter Legge, a British classical music producer and conductor, who had a vision of creating a world-class orchestra that would rival the best in Europe. Legge assembled a group of talented musicians from across the UK and Europe, including many who had fled their home countries during World War II. The orchestra's first concert was held on October 25, 1945, at the Royal Festival Hall in London, with Legge conducting. The program included works by Beethoven, Brahms, and Tchaikovsky, and was met with critical acclaim. Over the years, the Philharmonia Orchestra has been led by some of the most distinguished conductors in the world, including Herbert von Karajan, Riccardo Muti, and Christoph von Dohnányi. The orchestra has also collaborated with many of the world's greatest soloists, including Vladimir Ashkenazy, Martha Argerich, and Yo-Yo Ma. One of the highlights of the Philharmonia Orchestra's history was its collaboration with Karajan in the 1950s and 1960s. Karajan was known for his meticulous attention to detail and his ability to bring out the best in his musicians, and under his leadership, the Philharmonia Orchestra became one of the most sought-after orchestras in the world. During this time, the orchestra recorded many of the great works of the classical repertoire, including Beethoven's symphonies, Brahms' symphonies, and Wagner's Ring Cycle. These recordings are still considered some of the finest interpretations of these works ever recorded. In the 1980s and 1990s, the Philharmonia Orchestra continued to build on its reputation for excellence under the leadership of Muti and Dohnányi. During this time, the orchestra performed many world premieres of contemporary works, including pieces by Harrison Birtwistle, Elliott Carter, and György Ligeti. The Philharmonia Orchestra has also been recognized with many awards and accolades over the years. In 2002, the orchestra was awarded the Royal Philharmonic Society's Best Ensemble Award, and in 2005, it was named the Best Orchestra at the Classical Brit Awards. Today, the Philharmonia Orchestra continues to be one of the most respected and innovative orchestras in the world. Under the leadership of its current principal conductor, Esa-Pekka Salonen, the orchestra has continued to push the boundaries of classical music, with innovative programming and collaborations with artists from a wide range of genres. The Philharmonia Orchestra's current roster of musicians includes some of the most talented and respected musicians in the world. Among the orchestra's principal players are violinist Zsolt-Tihamér Visontay, cellist Richard Harwood, and clarinetist Mark van de Wiel. In addition to its regular concert series in London and around the UK, the Philharmonia Orchestra also tours extensively around the world, performing in some of the most prestigious concert halls and festivals. The orchestra has also continued to record extensively, with recent releases including a complete cycle of Beethoven's symphonies and a recording of Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring.
