The three clarinetists first met in 1982, when they were all studying at the Musikhochschule in Stuttgart. They quickly became friends and began playing together informally. In 1983, they decided to form a formal ensemble and named themselves Trio Di Clarone, after the Italian word for clarinet. The trio's repertoire includes a wide range of music, from classical to contemporary. They have commissioned many new works for clarinet trio and have also arranged works originally written for other instruments. Their performances are known for their technical precision, musicality, and sense of humor. One of the trio's early highlights was their performance at the 1984 International Clarinet Congress in Tokyo, Japan. Their performance was so well-received that they were invited back to Japan the following year for a tour. They have since performed all over the world, including in Europe, North America, South America, and Asia. In 1990, the trio released their first album, "The Art of the Clarinet Trio," which received critical acclaim and helped to establish them as one of the leading clarinet ensembles in the world. They have since released many more albums, including "Brahms: The Clarinet Trio and Quintet," "Mozart: The Clarinet Concerto and Quintet," and "Bartók: Contrasts." The trio has also received many awards and honors throughout their career. In 1991, they were awarded the Echo Klassik award for their album "The Art of the Clarinet Trio." They have also been awarded the German Record Critics' Award, the Cannes Classical Award, and the Diapason d'Or. In addition to their work as a trio, each member of Trio Di Clarone has also had a successful solo career. Sabine Meyer has been awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany and the French Legion of Honor for her contributions to music. Wolfgang Meyer has been awarded the German Record Critics' Award and the Echo Klassik award for his solo recordings. Reiner Wehle has been awarded the German Record Critics' Award and the Echo Klassik award for his recordings with the Ensemble Villa Musica. Trio Di Clarone continues to perform and record together, and their contributions to the world of classical music have been significant.
