Philharmonia Bulgarica is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1978 in Sofia, Bulgaria. The ensemble was established with the aim of promoting Bulgarian classical music and showcasing the country's rich cultural heritage to the world. Over the years, Philharmonia Bulgarica has become one of the most renowned classical music ensembles in Bulgaria, and has gained international recognition for its exceptional performances. The ensemble was founded by the Bulgarian conductor Emil Tabakov, who served as its artistic director and principal conductor for many years. Tabakov was born in Sofia in 1947, and began his musical career as a violinist. He later studied conducting at the Sofia State Academy of Music, and went on to become one of Bulgaria's most prominent conductors. Tabakov has conducted many of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the New York Philharmonic. Philharmonia Bulgarica's main members are highly skilled musicians who have been carefully selected for their exceptional talent and dedication to classical music. The ensemble is made up of around 70 musicians, including string players, wind players, and percussionists. Many of the musicians are graduates of the Sofia State Academy of Music, and have gone on to have successful careers as soloists and chamber musicians. One of the highlights of Philharmonia Bulgarica's career was its performance at the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow. The ensemble was invited to perform at the opening ceremony of the games, and played a selection of Bulgarian folk songs and classical pieces. The performance was widely praised for its energy and enthusiasm, and helped to raise the profile of Bulgarian classical music on the international stage. Another notable performance by Philharmonia Bulgarica was its collaboration with the Bulgarian National Choir in 1990. The ensemble and choir performed a series of concerts in Bulgaria and abroad, showcasing the rich tradition of Bulgarian choral music. The concerts were a huge success, and helped to cement Philharmonia Bulgarica's reputation as one of the leading classical music ensembles in Bulgaria. In 1985, the ensemble was awarded the Order of Cyril and Methodius, one of Bulgaria's highest honors, for its contribution to Bulgarian culture. In 1998, Philharmonia Bulgarica was awarded the Golden Lyre, Bulgaria's most prestigious music award, in recognition of its outstanding achievements in the field of classical music. In addition to its performances, Philharmonia Bulgarica has also recorded many albums, showcasing the rich tradition of Bulgarian classical music. The ensemble's recordings include works by Bulgarian composers such as Pancho Vladigerov, Marin Goleminov, and Georgi Atanasov, as well as classical works by composers such as Mozart, Beethoven, and Brahms. Today, Philharmonia Bulgarica continues to be one of the leading classical music ensembles in Bulgaria, and is renowned for its exceptional performances and dedication to promoting Bulgarian culture. The ensemble's current artistic director and principal conductor is Nayden Todorov, who has been with the ensemble since 1998. Under Todorov's leadership, Philharmonia Bulgarica has continued to push the boundaries of classical music, and has gained a new generation of fans both in Bulgaria and abroad.
