He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a jazz pianist and his mother a classical pianist. From a young age, Don was exposed to a wide variety of music, and he quickly developed a love for classical music. Don began his formal music education at the age of six, when he started taking piano lessons. He showed a natural talent for the instrument, and by the age of ten, he was already composing his own music. Don continued to study piano throughout his childhood and teenage years, and he also began to study composition. After graduating from high school, Don attended the Juilliard School in New York City, where he studied composition with some of the most renowned composers of the time. After completing his studies at Juilliard, Don began to work as a freelance composer, writing music for a variety of different projects. One of Don's early successes was his composition "Concerto for Piano and Orchestra," which was premiered by the New York Philharmonic in 1975. Over the next few years, Don continued to compose music for a variety of different projects, including film scores, ballets, and operas. One of his most notable works during this time was his opera "The Tempest," which was based on the play by William Shakespeare. The opera premiered in 1982 and was a critical and commercial success. In the 1990s, Don began to focus more on composing orchestral music. He wrote a number of symphonies and other large-scale works during this time, including his Symphony No. 1, which was premiered by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in 1995.
