De Labyrintho is a classical music ensemble that specializes in performing music from the Renaissance and Baroque periods. The ensemble was founded in 1987 by a group of musicians who shared a passion for early music and a desire to explore the rich repertoire of this era. The founding members of De Labyrintho were Jordi Savall, Montserrat Figueras, Rolf Lislevand, and Pedro Estevan. Savall, a renowned viola da gamba player, served as the artistic director of the ensemble, while Figueras, a soprano, was the lead vocalist. Lislevand played the lute and guitar, while Estevan was a percussionist. From the beginning, De Labyrintho was committed to performing music in a historically informed manner, using period instruments and techniques to recreate the sound and style of the music as it would have been heard in its original context. The ensemble's name, which means "the labyrinth," reflects this commitment to exploring the intricate and complex world of early music. Over the years, De Labyrintho has become one of the most respected and acclaimed early music ensembles in the world. The ensemble has performed at major festivals and concert halls throughout Europe and North America, and has released numerous recordings that have received critical acclaim and won awards. One of the highlights of De Labyrintho's career was their performance at the 1991 Festival de Saintes in France, where they presented a program of music by the Spanish composer Francisco Guerrero. The performance was a critical and popular success, and helped to establish the ensemble's reputation as one of the leading interpreters of Renaissance and Baroque music. Another notable performance by De Labyrintho was their 1998 concert at the Cité de la Musique in Paris, where they presented a program of music by the Italian composer Claudio Monteverdi. The concert was recorded and released as a live album, which won the prestigious Diapason d'Or award. In addition to their performances and recordings, De Labyrintho has also been involved in a number of educational and outreach programs, aimed at introducing audiences to the world of early music and promoting the importance of historical performance practices. The ensemble has worked with schools, universities, and community organizations to offer workshops, masterclasses, and lectures on early music and its cultural context. Despite the passing of some of its founding members, De Labyrintho continues to perform and record, with a new generation of musicians carrying on the ensemble's legacy of excellence and innovation in the field of early music. Today, the ensemble is recognized as one of the most important and influential groups in the world of classical music, and continues to inspire and delight audiences with its performances of music from the Renaissance and Baroque periods.
