Period:ClassicalGenre:OperaRaili Kostia was a Finnish classical music artist who was born on May 22, 1924, in Helsinki, Finland. She was the daughter of a Finnish composer, pianist, and conductor, Erkki Melartin, who was a significant figure in Finnish music during the early 20th century. Raili Kostia grew up in a musical family, and her father's influence played a significant role in her musical development. Kostia began her musical training at an early age, studying piano and violin. She later attended the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, where she studied under the renowned Finnish violinist, Aino Ackté. Kostia's talent as a violinist was evident from an early age, and she quickly gained recognition as one of the most promising young musicians in Finland. In 1944, Kostia made her debut as a soloist with the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, performing the Violin Concerto by Jean Sibelius. The performance was a resounding success, and Kostia's career as a soloist took off. She went on to perform with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic. Kostia's repertoire was extensive, and she was particularly known for her interpretations of the works of Finnish composers, including Sibelius, Melartin, and Einojuhani Rautavaara. She was also a champion of contemporary music and premiered many new works by Finnish and international composers. Throughout her career, Kostia received numerous awards and honors for her contributions to classical music. In 1952, she was awarded the Pro Finlandia Medal, one of Finland's highest honors for cultural achievements. She was also awarded the Sibelius Medal in 1975, in recognition of her outstanding contributions to the interpretation of Sibelius's music. One of Kostia's most significant achievements was her role in the founding of the Helsinki Chamber Orchestra in 1967. The orchestra was established with the aim of promoting Finnish music and providing a platform for young Finnish musicians. Kostia served as the orchestra's artistic director for many years, and under her leadership, the orchestra gained international recognition for its innovative programming and high-quality performances. Kostia continued to perform and record well into her later years, and her legacy as one of Finland's most celebrated classical musicians lives on. She passed away on December 5, 2017, at the age of 93, leaving behind a rich musical legacy that continues to inspire and delight audiences around the world.More....
