The Los Angeles Children's Chorus (LACC) is a world-renowned classical music organization that has been providing exceptional choral education and performance opportunities to children and youth in Southern California for over 35 years. Founded in 1986 by Rebecca Thompson, the LACC has grown to become one of the most respected and accomplished children's choirs in the world. The LACC was born out of a desire to provide high-quality choral education and performance opportunities to children in the Los Angeles area. Rebecca Thompson, a professional singer and voice teacher, recognized the need for a children's choir that would offer a rigorous and comprehensive music education program, as well as opportunities to perform at the highest level. With the help of a group of dedicated parents and volunteers, Thompson founded the LACC in 1986. From its humble beginnings, the LACC quickly established itself as a force to be reckoned with in the world of choral music. The choir's first major performance was at the Hollywood Bowl in 1987, where they performed with the Los Angeles Philharmonic under the direction of conductor Andre Previn. This performance was a huge success and helped to establish the LACC as a premier children's choir in the United States. Over the years, the LACC has continued to grow and evolve, expanding its programs and repertoire to include a wide range of musical styles and genres. The choir has performed with some of the world's most renowned conductors and orchestras, including Gustavo Dudamel and the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Esa-Pekka Salonen and the Philharmonia Orchestra, and John Williams and the Boston Pops Orchestra. One of the highlights of the LACC's performance history was their appearance at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah. The choir was invited to perform at the opening ceremonies, where they sang the Olympic Hymn and the American national anthem. This performance was seen by millions of people around the world and helped to cement the LACC's reputation as one of the top children's choirs in the world. In addition to their many high-profile performances, the LACC has also received numerous awards and accolades over the years. In 1995, the choir was awarded the Margaret Hillis Award for Choral Excellence by Chorus America, the national service organization for choral music in the United States. This award recognized the LACC's outstanding contributions to the field of choral music and their commitment to excellence in performance and education. Another major milestone for the LACC came in 2011, when they were invited to perform at the White House for President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama. The choir performed a selection of traditional American folk songs and spirituals, as well as a piece by composer Morten Lauridsen, who has been a longtime supporter of the LACC. Today, the LACC continues to be a leader in the world of choral music, providing exceptional education and performance opportunities to children and youth in Southern California. The choir's programs include a comprehensive choral education curriculum, as well as opportunities to perform in a variety of settings, from local community events to international tours. The LACC is also committed to promoting diversity and inclusion in the arts, and has launched several initiatives aimed at increasing access to choral music education for underserved communities.
