He was the son of a violinist and a pianist, and his parents recognized his musical talent at an early age. At the age of six, he began taking violin lessons from his father, and by the age of ten, he was already performing in public. Schneiderhan's talent was quickly recognized, and he was accepted into the Vienna Music Academy at the age of 12. He studied under the renowned violinist Julius Stwertka, and by the age of 16, he had already won several awards and competitions. In 1933, he won first prize at the International Violin Competition in Vienna, which launched his career as a professional musician. Schneiderhan's career took off quickly, and he began performing with some of the most prestigious orchestras in Europe. In 1937, he became the concertmaster of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, a position he held until 1945. During this time, he also performed as a soloist with the orchestra, and his performances were widely acclaimed. In 1945, Schneiderhan left the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and began a solo career. He quickly established himself as one of the leading violinists of his time, and he performed with many of the world's top orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic. Schneiderhan was known for his technical skill and his ability to bring out the emotional depth of the music he played. He was particularly renowned for his interpretations of the works of Mozart, Beethoven, and Brahms, and he recorded many of their works throughout his career. One of Schneiderhan's most notable performances was his 1957 recording of Mozart's Violin Concerto No. 5 in A major, which is still considered one of the definitive recordings of the piece. He also recorded several of Beethoven's violin sonatas, including the "Kreutzer" Sonata, which is widely regarded as one of the greatest works in the violin repertoire. Throughout his career, Schneiderhan received many awards and honors for his contributions to classical music. In 1955, he was awarded the Grand Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, and in 1961, he was awarded the Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art. He was also a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music and the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts. Schneiderhan continued to perform and record throughout his career, and he remained active until his death in 2002 at the age of 87.
