Franui is a classical music ensemble that hails from the small village of Innervillgraten in the Austrian state of Tyrol. The group was founded in 1993 by Andreas Schett, who serves as the ensemble's artistic director and trumpet player. The name "Franui" comes from the local dialect and refers to a nearby mountain pasture. The ensemble's core members are all from the same region and have been playing music together since childhood. In addition to Schett, the group includes Markus Kraler (accordion, piano), Angelika Rainer (clarinet), Bettina Rainer (clarinet), Martin Senfter (double bass), and Nikolai Tunkowitsch (violin). The group also frequently collaborates with other musicians and artists. Franui's music is difficult to categorize, as it draws on a wide range of influences and styles. The group's repertoire includes traditional folk music from the Tyrolean region, classical music, jazz, and contemporary compositions. The ensemble is known for its innovative arrangements and playful, improvisational approach to performance. Over the years, Franui has become one of the most acclaimed and sought-after ensembles in Austria and beyond. The group has performed at major festivals and venues throughout Europe, including the Salzburg Festival, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Vienna Konzerthaus. Franui has also collaborated with a number of prominent artists, including actor Klaus Maria Brandauer and composer Olga Neuwirth. One of Franui's most notable performances was their 2012 concert at the Salzburg Festival, where they performed their own arrangements of Schubert lieder. The concert was a critical and commercial success, and led to the release of the album "Schubertlieder" on the German label Col Legno. The album received widespread acclaim and was nominated for the Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik. Another highlight of Franui's career was their 2016 collaboration with the German director and choreographer Christoph Marthaler. The resulting production, "King Size," premiered at the Ruhrtriennale festival and went on to tour throughout Europe. The production featured Franui's music alongside Marthaler's signature blend of theater, dance, and visual art. In addition to their live performances, Franui has released a number of critically acclaimed albums. These include "Alma" (2013), which features the ensemble's arrangements of songs by the Austrian composer Alma Mahler, and "Ständchen der Dinge" (2018), which includes original compositions by the group inspired by the poetry of Rainer Maria Rilke. Franui has received numerous awards and honors over the years. In 2011, the ensemble was awarded the prestigious "Outstanding Artist Award" by the Austrian Federal Ministry for Education, Arts and Culture. The group has also been nominated for the Amadeus Austrian Music Award and the German Echo Klassik Award. Despite their success, Franui remains deeply rooted in their local community and continues to draw inspiration from the traditions and landscapes of their home region. The group frequently performs in small churches and community halls throughout Tyrol, and has been known to incorporate local musicians and singers into their performances. In conclusion, Franui is a unique and innovative ensemble that has made a significant impact on the world of classical music.
