St. Petersburg Soloists is a renowned classical music ensemble that was founded in 1985 by the celebrated Russian violinist and conductor, Yuri Bashmet. The ensemble is known for its exceptional musicianship, technical prowess, and innovative programming, and has established itself as one of the leading chamber orchestras in the world. Yuri Bashmet, who was born in Rostov-on-Don, Russia, in 1953, began playing the violin at the age of six. He studied at the Moscow Conservatory under the tutelage of the legendary violinist David Oistrakh, and quickly established himself as a virtuoso performer. In the 1970s and 1980s, Bashmet gained international recognition for his performances and recordings, and became known for his unique style of playing that combined the technical precision of the Russian school with a more expressive and emotional approach. In 1985, Bashmet founded St. Petersburg Soloists with a group of like-minded musicians who shared his passion for chamber music. The ensemble was initially made up of 14 musicians, all of whom were soloists in their own right. The group's aim was to create a chamber orchestra that would be dedicated to exploring the rich repertoire of classical music, and to bringing new and innovative works to audiences around the world. Over the years, St. Petersburg Soloists has grown in size and reputation, and has become known for its exceptional performances and recordings. One of the highlights of St. Petersburg Soloists' career was their performance at the 1988 Salzburg Festival, where they played a program of works by Mozart, Schubert, and Shostakovich. The performance was a critical and commercial success, and helped to establish the ensemble as one of the leading chamber orchestras in the world. Another notable performance by St. Petersburg Soloists was their 1992 concert at the Berlin Philharmonic, where they played a program of works by Tchaikovsky, Shostakovich, and Schnittke. The concert was recorded and released on CD, and received widespread critical acclaim. St. Petersburg Soloists has also been recognized for their recordings, which have won numerous awards and accolades. In 1995, the ensemble won a Grammy Award for their recording of Schnittke's Concerto Grosso No. 6/Moz-Art à la Haydn, and in 2008, they won a Grammy Award for their recording of Shostakovich's Chamber Symphonies.
