Rundfunkchor Leipzig is a renowned classical music artist that has been captivating audiences with their exceptional performances for over 70 years. The choir was founded in 1946 in Leipzig, Germany, and has since become one of the most respected and celebrated choirs in the world. The choir was established by the German radio station Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk (MDR) as part of their cultural programming. The founding conductor was Helmut Koch, who led the choir until 1972. Under his leadership, the choir quickly gained a reputation for excellence, and their performances were broadcast on radio and television throughout Germany. In 1972, Herbert Kegel took over as conductor of the choir. Kegel was a highly respected conductor and had previously led the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra. Under his direction, the choir continued to flourish, and their reputation grew even further. Kegel was known for his meticulous attention to detail and his ability to bring out the best in his singers. Over the years, Rundfunkchor Leipzig has performed with some of the world's most renowned orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Vienna Philharmonic, and the London Symphony Orchestra. They have also collaborated with many of the world's most celebrated conductors, including Herbert von Karajan, Leonard Bernstein, and Claudio Abbado. One of the highlights of the choir's career was their performance of Bach's St. Matthew Passion in 1981. The performance was conducted by Herbert Kegel and featured soloists Peter Schreier and Theo Adam. The concert was recorded and released on CD, and it remains one of the most celebrated recordings of the work. In 1991, the choir was invited to perform at the Salzburg Festival, one of the most prestigious classical music festivals in the world. They performed Brahms' Ein deutsches Requiem under the direction of conductor Kurt Masur. The performance was a huge success, and the choir received a standing ovation from the audience. In 2003, the choir was awarded the Echo Klassik award for their recording of Brahms' Ein deutsches Requiem. The Echo Klassik is one of the most prestigious classical music awards in Germany, and it is awarded annually to the best classical music recordings of the year. In 2012, the choir celebrated their 66th anniversary with a performance of Bach's Mass in B Minor. The concert was conducted by their current conductor, Risto Joost, and featured soloists including soprano Dorothee Mields and tenor Julian Prégardien. The performance was a huge success, and it was broadcast on radio and television throughout Germany. Today, Rundfunkchor Leipzig continues to be one of the most respected and celebrated choirs in the world. They perform regularly at major concert halls and festivals throughout Europe, and they have released numerous recordings that have received critical acclaim.
