Susan Babini is a renowned cellist and music educator who has made significant contributions to the world of classical music. Born in 1971 in New York City, Babini grew up in a family of musicians and was exposed to music from a young age. Her father was a jazz pianist, and her mother was a classical pianist, so Babini was surrounded by music from both genres. Babini began playing the cello at the age of six and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. She studied with several renowned cellists, including Bernard Greenhouse, Timothy Eddy, and Joel Krosnick. Babini attended the Juilliard School, where she earned her Bachelor of Music degree, and later went on to earn her Master of Music degree from the Yale School of Music. Throughout her career, Babini has performed with some of the world's most prestigious orchestras and chamber ensembles. She has been a member of the New York Philharmonic since 2006, where she serves as the assistant principal cellist. Babini has also performed with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Philadelphia Orchestra, and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, among others. In addition to her work as an orchestral musician, Babini is also an accomplished chamber musician. She has performed with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, the Marlboro Music Festival, and the Seattle Chamber Music Society, among others. Babini has also collaborated with many renowned musicians, including pianist Emanuel Ax, violinist Joshua Bell, and cellist Yo-Yo Ma. Babini has received numerous awards and accolades throughout her career. In 1998, she was awarded the Avery Fisher Career Grant, which is given to outstanding young musicians who show exceptional talent and promise. Babini has also been a recipient of the S&R Foundation's Washington Award, which recognizes artists who have made significant contributions to their field. In addition to her work as a performer, Babini is also a dedicated music educator. She has taught at several prestigious institutions, including the Juilliard School, the Yale School of Music, and the Manhattan School of Music. Babini is currently on the faculty at the Bard College Conservatory of Music, where she teaches cello and chamber music.
