Hans Christian Braein was a Norwegian classical music artist who was born on May 12, 1929, in Oslo, Norway. He was the youngest of three children born to his parents, who were both musicians. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist. From a young age, Braein was exposed to music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Braein's parents recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. He began studying the piano with his mother and later with several renowned pianists in Norway. He also studied composition and conducting at the Oslo Conservatory of Music. In 1952, Braein made his debut as a pianist with the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra. He quickly gained recognition for his virtuosic playing and was invited to perform with several other orchestras in Norway and Europe. In 1956, he won the prestigious Grieg Prize for his interpretation of Edvard Grieg's Piano Concerto in A minor. Braein's career continued to flourish throughout the 1960s and 1970s. He performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic. He also recorded extensively, releasing over 50 albums of solo piano music and chamber music. In addition to his work as a pianist, Braein was also a respected conductor. He served as the music director of the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra from 1965 to 1970 and the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra from 1970 to 1975. He also conducted several other orchestras in Norway and Europe. Braein's repertoire was wide-ranging, encompassing works by classical composers such as Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven, as well as contemporary composers such as Bartok and Stravinsky. He was particularly known for his interpretations of Grieg's music, and he recorded several albums of Grieg's piano music. Throughout his career, Braein received numerous awards and honors. In addition to the Grieg Prize, he was awarded the Order of St. Olav, one of Norway's highest honors, in 1975. He was also made a Knight of the Order of the Dannebrog by the Danish government in 1980. Braein continued to perform and record into his later years, despite suffering from arthritis in his hands. He died on January 1, 2005, at the age of 75. His legacy as one of Norway's greatest classical music artists lives on through his recordings and the many musicians he inspired.
