He was born on August 15, 1951, in Chicago, Illinois, and grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a jazz musician, and his mother was a singer. Gene was exposed to music from a young age and started playing the tuba when he was in the fourth grade. Gene's talent for playing the tuba was evident from the beginning, and he quickly became a standout performer in his school's music program. He continued to hone his skills throughout his high school years and went on to study music at DePaul University in Chicago. After graduating from DePaul, Gene began his professional career as a tuba player with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra. He spent two years with the orchestra before returning to the United States to join the Utah Symphony Orchestra. He played with the Utah Symphony for six years before being offered a position with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in 1989. Gene's time with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra was a highlight of his career. He played with the orchestra for over 30 years and was a key member of the brass section. He was known for his exceptional technique and musicality, and his performances were always a highlight of the orchestra's concerts. Throughout his career, Gene has also been an active soloist and chamber musician. He has performed with numerous orchestras and ensembles around the world, including the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Berlin Philharmonic.
