Born in the Philippines in 1977, Laurel showed an early aptitude for music and began studying piano at the age of four. His parents, both music teachers, recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. Laurel's early training was rigorous and focused, with a strong emphasis on technique and musicality. He studied with some of the most respected piano teachers in the Philippines, including Abelardo Galang II and Raul Sunico. He also participated in numerous competitions and festivals, winning top prizes and gaining recognition as a rising star in the classical music world. In 1995, Laurel was awarded a full scholarship to study at the Juilliard School in New York City, one of the most prestigious music schools in the world. There, he studied with renowned pianists and teachers such as Jerome Lowenthal and Yoheved Kaplinsky, honing his skills and deepening his understanding of the music he loved. After graduating from Juilliard with a Bachelor of Music degree in 1999, Laurel embarked on a career as a soloist and chamber musician, performing in some of the world's most prestigious concert halls and festivals. He has appeared as a soloist with orchestras such as the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra, the Manila Symphony Orchestra, and the New York Symphonic Ensemble, among others. Laurel's performances have been praised for their technical brilliance, emotional depth, and musical sensitivity. He has a particular affinity for the music of Chopin, Liszt, and Rachmaninoff, and has recorded several albums of their works. He is also a champion of contemporary music, having premiered works by composers such as Lowell Liebermann and Michael Torke. In addition to his busy performance schedule, Laurel is also a dedicated teacher and mentor. He has taught at the University of Santo Tomas Conservatory of Music in Manila, as well as at the Juilliard School's Pre-College Division. He is currently on the faculty of the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where he teaches piano and chamber music. Throughout his career, Laurel has received numerous awards and accolades for his artistry and contributions to the classical music world. In 2001, he was awarded the Gawad CCP para sa Sining (National Artist Award) by the Cultural Center of the Philippines, in recognition of his outstanding achievements as a musician. He has also been a recipient of the prestigious Yamaha Music Foundation of Europe Scholarship, the Juilliard School's William Petschek Piano Scholarship, and the Philippine Presidential Medal of Merit. Laurel's performances continue to inspire and delight audiences around the world, and his dedication to music and teaching has made him a beloved figure in the classical music community.
