The Bulgarian Radio Symphony Chorus is a renowned classical music artist that has been captivating audiences with its exceptional performances for over 70 years. The chorus was founded in 1948 as part of the Bulgarian National Radio, and since then, it has become one of the most respected and celebrated choirs in the world. The birth of the Bulgarian Radio Symphony Chorus can be traced back to the post-World War II era when Bulgaria was under communist rule. The country's leaders recognized the importance of music as a tool for propaganda and cultural diplomacy, and they invested heavily in the arts. The Bulgarian National Radio was established in 1935, and it quickly became a hub for classical music in the country. In 1948, the radio station decided to form a professional choir to perform on its programs, and the Bulgarian Radio Symphony Chorus was born. The early years of the chorus were marked by intense rehearsals and performances. The choir's first conductor was Georgi Robev, a prominent Bulgarian composer and conductor who had studied in Vienna and Berlin. Robev was a strict taskmaster who demanded perfection from his singers, and he quickly established the chorus as a force to be reckoned with in the classical music world. One of the highlights of the Bulgarian Radio Symphony Chorus's early years was its performance of Verdi's Requiem in 1951. The concert was broadcast live on the radio, and it was a huge success. The choir's powerful and emotional rendition of the piece earned them critical acclaim and cemented their reputation as one of the best choirs in Europe. Over the years, the Bulgarian Radio Symphony Chorus has performed with some of the world's most renowned conductors and orchestras. In 1962, the choir collaborated with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra and conductor Herbert von Karajan on a recording of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. The recording was a huge success and is still considered one of the definitive versions of the piece. In 1979, the Bulgarian Radio Symphony Chorus embarked on a tour of the United States, performing in cities such as New York, Boston, and Washington, D.C. The tour was a major success, and the choir received standing ovations at every performance. The tour helped to raise the profile of the Bulgarian Radio Symphony Chorus in the United States and introduced American audiences to the beauty and power of Bulgarian choral music. Throughout its history, the Bulgarian Radio Symphony Chorus has won numerous awards and accolades for its performances. In 1966, the choir was awarded the Grand Prix at the International Choral Competition in Arezzo, Italy. The following year, the choir won the Grand Prix at the International Choral Competition in Varna, Bulgaria. In 1989, the choir was awarded the Order of Cyril and Methodius, one of Bulgaria's highest honors, for its contributions to Bulgarian culture. One of the most significant moments in the Bulgarian Radio Symphony Chorus's history came in 1990, following the fall of communism in Bulgaria. The choir had been closely associated with the communist regime, and many of its members were suspected of being informants for the secret police. In the wake of the regime's collapse, the choir underwent a period of soul-searching and transformation. Many of the old guard were replaced, and the choir began to embrace a more diverse and inclusive repertoire.
