Artist Info

Werner Taube was a renowned classical music artist who was born on May 12, 1928, in Berlin, Germany. He was the son of a Jewish father and a Christian mother, and his family fled to Sweden in 1939 to escape the persecution of Jews in Nazi Germany. Taube grew up in Stockholm and began his musical education at the age of six, studying the piano and violin. He later studied at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, where he focused on the violin and composition. Taube's talent as a violinist was recognized early on, and he made his debut as a soloist with the Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra at the age of 16. He went on to perform with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Vienna Philharmonic, and the New York Philharmonic. Taube was known for his virtuosic playing and his ability to bring out the emotional depth of the music he performed. In addition to his career as a soloist, Taube was also a respected chamber musician. He was a founding member of the Stockholm Trio, which was known for its interpretations of the works of Beethoven, Brahms, and Schubert. Taube also collaborated with many other musicians, including pianist Emil Gilels and cellist Mstislav Rostropovich. Taube's repertoire was wide-ranging, and he was particularly known for his interpretations of the works of Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven. He was also a champion of contemporary music and premiered works by many composers, including Witold Lutosławski, Krzysztof Penderecki, and Alfred Schnittke. Throughout his career, Taube received many awards and honors. He was awarded the Royal Swedish Academy of Music's Litteris et Artibus medal in 1972 and was made a member of the academy in 1980. He was also awarded the Order of the Polar Star by the Swedish government in 1988. In 1993, he was awarded the Royal Philharmonic Society's Gold Medal, which is one of the highest honors in classical music. One of Taube's most memorable performances took place in 1967, when he performed the Brahms Violin Concerto with the Berlin Philharmonic under the direction of Herbert von Karajan. The performance was recorded and released on Deutsche Grammophon, and it is still considered one of the definitive recordings of the work. Taube continued to perform and record well into his later years. He gave his final concert in 2008, at the age of 80, and passed away on January 24, 2011, at the age of 82. He left behind a legacy as one of the greatest violinists of the 20th century, and his recordings continue to be admired and studied by musicians and music lovers around the world.
