The ensemble was founded in 1991 by conductor and harpsichordist Gregor Meyer, with the aim of performing music from the Baroque and Classical periods on period instruments. The ensemble's main members include a core group of musicians who specialize in historically informed performance practice. These include violinists Anne Röhrig and Susanne Scholz, violist Friedemann Wezel, cellist Michael Schönheit, and bassist Thomas Fritzsch. The ensemble also collaborates with a number of guest musicians, including vocal soloists and instrumentalists. Camerata Lipsiensis has performed extensively throughout Germany and Europe, and has gained a reputation for its high-quality performances and innovative programming. The ensemble has been praised for its ability to bring new life to familiar works, as well as for its commitment to exploring lesser-known repertoire. One of the highlights of Camerata Lipsiensis's career was its performance of Bach's St. Matthew Passion in 2000. The ensemble's interpretation of this monumental work was widely acclaimed, and the performance was recorded and released on CD. The ensemble has also performed other major works by Bach, including the Mass in B Minor and the Brandenburg Concertos. In addition to its performances of Baroque and Classical music, Camerata Lipsiensis has also explored music from later periods, including the Romantic and Modern eras. The ensemble has performed works by composers such as Schubert, Brahms, and Mahler, as well as contemporary composers such as Arvo Pärt and John Tavener. Camerata Lipsiensis has received numerous awards and accolades for its performances and recordings. In 2003, the ensemble was awarded the Echo Klassik award for its recording of Bach's St. Matthew Passion. The ensemble has also been praised for its recordings of works by Handel, Telemann, and other Baroque composers. Overall, Camerata Lipsiensis has established itself as one of the leading ensembles in the field of historically informed performance practice.
