Gorokhov's musical education began at the Rimsky-Korsakov Music School in St. Petersburg, where he studied under the guidance of Professor Anatoly Nikitin. He then went on to study at the St. Petersburg Conservatory, where he was a student of Professor Anatoly Nikitin and Professor Natalia Shakhovskaya. Gorokhov graduated from the conservatory with honors in 1992. After completing his studies, Gorokhov began his professional career as a cellist.
