Samuel Mayes was born on January 15, 1985, in New York City. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his mother being a pianist and his father a cellist. From a young age, Mayes was exposed to classical music and began playing the cello at the age of four. Mayes attended the Juilliard School in New York City, where he studied under the renowned cellist Joel Krosnick. He also studied with cellists such as Bernard Greenhouse and Timothy Eddy. Mayes graduated from Juilliard with a Bachelor of Music degree in 2007 and a Master of Music degree in 2009. Mayes quickly established himself as a rising star in the classical music world. In 2006, he won the Juilliard Concerto Competition, which led to his debut performance with the Juilliard Orchestra. He also won the 2007 Irving M. Klein International String Competition, which earned him a cash prize and a series of performances with major orchestras. Mayes has performed as a soloist with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra.
