Riverside Symphony is a classical music ensemble based in New York City. Founded in 1981 by conductor George Rothman, the ensemble has become known for its innovative programming and commitment to contemporary music. Rothman, a graduate of the Juilliard School, had previously conducted the New York City Opera and the American Symphony Orchestra before founding Riverside Symphony. He sought to create an ensemble that would showcase both established classical works and new compositions, with a particular emphasis on American composers. The ensemble's core members include a mix of seasoned professionals and up-and-coming musicians. Notable members have included violinist Miranda Cuckson, cellist Fred Sherry, and pianist Ursula Oppens. Over the years, Riverside Symphony has performed a wide range of repertoire, from Bach and Beethoven to contemporary composers like John Adams and Philip Glass. The ensemble has also commissioned and premiered numerous new works, including pieces by composers such as Joan Tower, John Corigliano, and Christopher Rouse. One of the ensemble's most notable performances came in 1990, when they presented a concert at Carnegie Hall featuring the world premiere of Corigliano's Symphony No. 1. The piece, which was commissioned by Riverside Symphony, went on to win the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 1991. In addition to their regular concert series in New York City, Riverside Symphony has also performed at major festivals and venues around the world. They have appeared at the Tanglewood Music Festival, the Ravinia Festival, and the Kennedy Center, among others. Throughout their history, Riverside Symphony has received numerous awards and accolades for their performances and recordings. They have been praised for their technical precision, musical sensitivity, and adventurous programming. Today, Riverside Symphony continues to be a leading force in the classical music world, with a commitment to showcasing both the classics and the cutting-edge of contemporary composition. With their innovative programming and dedication to excellence, they are sure to remain a fixture of the classical music scene for years to come.
