Pulcinella is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 2000 by the Italian pianist and composer, Orazio Sciortino. The ensemble is named after the character Pulcinella, a traditional Italian commedia dell'arte figure who is known for his wit and humor. The founding members of Pulcinella were Orazio Sciortino on piano, Francesco Senese on violin, and Francesco Dillon on cello. The ensemble was later joined by clarinetist Vincenzo Paci, flutist Marco Rogliano, and percussionist Simone Beneventi. Pulcinella's repertoire includes both classical and contemporary music, with a particular focus on the works of Italian composers. The ensemble has performed in major concert halls and festivals throughout Europe, Asia, and the United States, and has received critical acclaim for its innovative programming and virtuosic performances. One of Pulcinella's most notable performances was at the 2006 Venice Biennale, where the ensemble premiered a new work by the Italian composer Salvatore Sciarrino. The piece, titled "Lo spazio inverso," was a challenging and complex work that showcased the ensemble's technical prowess and musical sensitivity. In addition to its performances, Pulcinella has also been recognized for its recordings. The ensemble's debut album, "Pulcinella Plays Stravinsky," was released in 2005 and received widespread critical acclaim. The album features the ensemble's interpretations of several of Stravinsky's most famous works, including "The Rite of Spring" and "Pulcinella Suite." Pulcinella has also been the recipient of several awards and honors. In 2007, the ensemble was awarded the prestigious "Premio Abbiati" by the Italian music critics' association for its contributions to the Italian music scene. The ensemble has also been recognized by the Italian Ministry of Culture for its efforts to promote Italian music both at home and abroad. Despite its success, Pulcinella remains committed to its mission of bringing classical music to new audiences and promoting the works of contemporary composers. The ensemble continues to perform regularly and collaborate with other musicians and artists from around the world.
