Antonio Martín y Coll was a Spanish composer and musician who lived during the Baroque period. He was born in Valencia, Spain, on December 17, 1660, to a family of musicians. His father, Francisco Martín y Coll, was a renowned composer and organist, and his mother, Isabel de la Torre, was a singer. Antonio Martín y Coll showed an early interest in music and began his musical education under the guidance of his father. He learned to play the organ, harpsichord, and other instruments, and also received training in composition and music theory. He quickly showed a talent for music and began composing his own works at a young age. In 1680, Antonio Martín y Coll moved to Madrid to further his musical education. He studied under the famous composer Juan Hidalgo, who was the court composer for King Charles II of Spain. During his time in Madrid, Martín y Coll also worked as an organist and harpsichordist at the Royal Chapel. In 1685, Martín y Coll returned to Valencia and was appointed as the organist at the Cathedral of Valencia. He held this position for the rest of his life and became one of the most respected musicians in the city. He also worked as a music teacher and taught many students who went on to become successful musicians. Martín y Coll's music was heavily influenced by the Baroque style, which was characterized by ornate melodies, complex harmonies, and elaborate ornamentation. One of Martín y Coll's most famous works is his Missa Defunctorum, which is a requiem mass for the dead.
