Her mother was a pianist and her father was a jazz musician, so music was always a part of her life. Reaux attended the Juilliard School in New York City, where she studied voice and opera. She made her professional debut in 1968, singing the role of Pamina in Mozart's "The Magic Flute" at the New York City Opera. She quickly gained recognition for her powerful voice and dynamic stage presence. Throughout her career, Reaux performed in many of the world's most prestigious opera houses and concert halls. She sang with the Metropolitan Opera, the Paris Opera, the Royal Opera House in London, and the Vienna State Opera, among others. She also appeared in numerous concerts and recitals, showcasing her versatility as a performer. One of Reaux's most notable performances was in the title role of "Carmen" at the Metropolitan Opera in 1978. Her portrayal of the fiery gypsy was praised for its intensity and emotional depth. She also received critical acclaim for her performances in "La Bohème," "Don Giovanni," and "The Marriage of Figaro." In addition to her opera work, Reaux was also a sought-after concert performer. She sang with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra. She also collaborated with renowned conductors such as Leonard Bernstein, Seiji Ozawa, and James Levine. Reaux's talent and hard work were recognized with numerous awards and honors throughout her career. She was a recipient of the National Endowment for the Arts Opera Honors Award, the Richard Tucker Award, and the Marian Anderson Award. She was also inducted into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame in 2010. Despite her success, Reaux remained humble and dedicated to her craft. She was known for her warm personality and her willingness to mentor young singers. She continued to perform and teach until her retirement in 2010. Angelina Reaux passed away on September 17, 2021, at the age of 77. She leaves behind a legacy as one of the greatest opera singers of her generation.
