Ensemble Instrumental de France is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1969 by Jean-Pierre Wallez, a French violinist and conductor. The ensemble is known for its exceptional performances of classical music, particularly works by French composers. The founding of Ensemble Instrumental de France was a response to the growing interest in classical music in France during the 1960s. Wallez, who had already established himself as a talented violinist, wanted to create an ensemble that would showcase the best of French classical music to audiences around the world. He assembled a group of talented musicians, many of whom were his colleagues from the Paris Conservatory, and began rehearsing for their first performance. The ensemble's first major performance was in 1970, when they played at the Festival de Montreux in Switzerland. The performance was a huge success, and the ensemble quickly gained a reputation for their exceptional musicianship and their ability to bring new life to classical works. Over the years, Ensemble Instrumental de France has performed at some of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including the Royal Albert Hall in London, the Carnegie Hall in New York, and the Salle Pleyel in Paris. They have also collaborated with some of the world's most renowned conductors, including Leonard Bernstein, Seiji Ozawa, and Herbert von Karajan. One of the ensemble's most notable performances was their 1978 performance of Maurice Ravel's "Boléro" at the Royal Albert Hall. The performance was recorded and released as an album, which went on to become one of the best-selling classical albums of all time. The album features the ensemble's signature sound, which is characterized by their precise playing and their ability to bring out the nuances of the music. Ensemble Instrumental de France has also been recognized for their contributions to classical music. In 1981, they were awarded the Grand Prix du Disque for their recording of Francis Poulenc's "Concerto for Two Pianos and Orchestra." The ensemble has also been awarded the Victoires de la Musique Classique, a prestigious French music award, multiple times. The ensemble's current members include some of the most talented musicians in France. The ensemble is led by violinist and conductor Jean-Jacques Kantorow, who has been with the ensemble since 1984. Other notable members include cellist Xavier Phillips, pianist Jean-Philippe Collard, and clarinetist Michel Portal. Ensemble Instrumental de France continues to perform around the world, bringing their unique sound and interpretation of classical music to audiences everywhere. Their dedication to French classical music and their commitment to excellence have made them one of the most respected ensembles in the world of classical music.
