The Hamburger Symphoniker is a classical music ensemble based in Hamburg, Germany. The orchestra was founded in 1957 and has since become one of the most renowned orchestras in Germany. The founding of the Hamburger Symphoniker was a result of the merger of two existing orchestras in Hamburg, the Philharmonisches Staatsorchester Hamburg and the Radio-Symphonie-Orchester Hamburg. The new orchestra was led by conductor Hans Schmidt-Isserstedt, who served as the orchestra's principal conductor until 1971. Over the years, the Hamburger Symphoniker has had many notable members, including violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter, who served as the orchestra's artist-in-residence from 2000 to 2003. Other notable members have included cellist Heinrich Schiff and pianist Mitsuko Uchida. The Hamburger Symphoniker has performed at many prestigious venues around the world, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Royal Albert Hall in London, and Carnegie Hall in New York City. The orchestra has also collaborated with many renowned conductors, including Leonard Bernstein, Herbert von Karajan, and Claudio Abbado. One of the highlights of the Hamburger Symphoniker's history was their performance at the opening ceremony of the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich. The orchestra performed Beethoven's Symphony No. 9, which was broadcast to millions of viewers around the world. The Hamburger Symphoniker has also been recognized for their outstanding performances with numerous awards and accolades. In 2007, the orchestra was awarded the Echo Klassik award for their recording of Brahms' Symphony No. 1. The orchestra has also been awarded the German Record Critics' Award and the Diapason d'Or. In addition to their performances and recordings, the Hamburger Symphoniker is also committed to music education and outreach. The orchestra offers a variety of educational programs for children and young adults, including concerts and workshops.
