She was the daughter of a dentist and a homemaker, and she grew up in a musical family. Her mother was a singer, and her father played the piano. Munsel began singing at a young age, and she quickly developed a talent for it. Munsel's talent was recognized early on, and she began performing in local productions in Spokane. She made her professional debut at the age of 17, when she sang the role of Philine in Mignon with the San Francisco Opera. This performance was a huge success, and it launched Munsel's career as a classical music artist. Munsel went on to perform with many of the world's leading opera companies, including the Metropolitan Opera, the Royal Opera House in London, and La Scala in Milan.
