Voices of Ascension Chorus & Orchestra is a classical music ensemble based in New York City. The group was founded in 1990 by conductor and artistic director Dennis Keene, who sought to create a professional-level chorus and orchestra that would perform a wide range of choral repertoire, from early music to contemporary works. Keene, who had previously served as the music director of the New York Choral Society, assembled a group of talented singers and instrumentalists to form Voices of Ascension. The ensemble quickly gained a reputation for its high level of musicianship and its innovative programming, which often featured lesser-known works alongside more familiar pieces. One of the early highlights of Voices of Ascension's career came in 1993, when the group performed Bach's Mass in B Minor at Carnegie Hall. The performance was widely praised by critics, and helped to establish the ensemble as one of the leading choral groups in the United States. Over the years, Voices of Ascension has continued to perform at major venues throughout the country, including Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center, and the Ravinia Festival. The group has also collaborated with a number of prominent soloists, including mezzo-soprano Frederica von Stade, tenor Anthony Dean Griffey, and baritone Thomas Hampson. In addition to its live performances, Voices of Ascension has also released several acclaimed recordings. The group's discography includes works by Bach, Handel, Mozart, and Brahms, as well as more contemporary composers such as Arvo Pärt and John Tavener. One of the hallmarks of Voices of Ascension's performances is its attention to detail and nuance. Keene is known for his meticulous approach to conducting, and the ensemble's singers and instrumentalists are all highly skilled musicians who are able to bring a wide range of colors and textures to their performances. In recognition of its achievements, Voices of Ascension has received numerous awards and honors over the years. In 2003, the group was awarded the ASCAP/Chorus America Award for Adventurous Programming, which recognizes ensembles that demonstrate a commitment to performing new and innovative works. Voices of Ascension has also been recognized for its contributions to the field of early music. In 2010, the group received the Noah Greenberg Award from the American Musicological Society, which honors individuals or organizations that have made significant contributions to the study and performance of early music. Despite its many accomplishments, Voices of Ascension remains committed to its mission of bringing the beauty and power of choral music to audiences around the world. Through its performances, recordings, and educational programs, the ensemble continues to inspire and delight audiences with its artistry and passion for music.
